5-Axis Milling

Indexed 3+2 five-axis machining on the DMG MORI Ecomill 70. Five sides, undercuts and angled hole patterns in a single setup.

In 3+2 five-axis milling, the machine swivels both rotary axes to a fixed angular position and then mills 3-axis. This lets us machine five sides of a part in a single setup, with travel ranges up to 700 mm and tolerance class IT6. Fewer setups mean fewer positional errors. Quote within 24 hours.

Advantages

Why 5-Axis Machining?

Single Setup Only

Complex 3D geometries are manufactured in a single setup. This eliminates re-clamping errors and saves up to 40% production time.

Better Surfaces

Optimal tool engagement (always tangential to the surface) achieves Ra 0.4 µm without post-processing.

Undercuts

Access to contours that would require multiple special tools or EDM in 3-axis machining.

Shorter Tools

Tool can be steeply angled → shorter overhang → less vibration → higher accuracy.

Applications

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between 3+2 and simultaneous 5-axis?

3+2 machining (positional) swivels the rotary axes to fixed angles and then mills 3-axis. Simultaneous 5-axis moves all five axes at once and is required for true freeform surfaces such as turbine blades or impellers. We machine in 3+2, which covers prismatic parts, undercuts and angled hole patterns economically. For parts with true freeform surfaces we are happy to refer you to a partner shop.

What are the advantages of 5-axis milling over 3-axis?

Fewer setups (often just one), shorter machining times, better surface quality through optimal tool engagement, and access to undercuts without special tooling.

What materials can be machined in 5-axis?

Essentially all CNC materials: aluminum, steel, stainless steel, titanium, copper, brass, and high-performance plastics like PEEK and POM.

How large can 5-axis parts be?

On our DMG MORI Ecomill 70, we machine parts up to 700 × 550 × 510 mm. For larger workpieces, please contact us.
