Stainless Steel Turned Parts — Corrosion-Resistant & Precise
Stainless steels are indispensable for turned parts when corrosion resistance, food contact or high temperatures are required. The austenitic grades 1.4301 (V2A) and 1.4404 (V4A) cover approx. 80% of all inquiries.
Stainless steel places special demands on machining: lower cutting speeds, high-pressure coolant and wear-resistant inserts. On our DMG MORI NLX 2000 and Traub TNL 32, we routinely machine all common grades.
Stainless Steel Grades Overview
We process all common austenitic, ferritic and duplex stainless steels. The right grade depends on corrosion requirements, strength and approvals.
1.4301 (V2A)
The classic: good corrosion resistance, food-safe, good machinability. For mechanical engineering, food industry and general applications.
1.4404 (V4A)
Molybdenum-alloyed for increased resistance to chlorides and acids. For chemical, pharmaceutical and marine applications.
1.4571 (V4A)
Titanium-stabilized variant of V4A. Better weldability and intergranular corrosion resistance. For pressure vessels and piping.
Duplex 1.4462
Twice the strength of V2A with comparable corrosion resistance. For highly stressed components in oil & gas, offshore and chemical industries.
17-4PH (1.4542)
Precipitation-hardenable — strengths up to 1,300 MPa possible. For valves, pump parts and highly stressed components.
1.4305 (Free-cutting)
Sulfur-alloyed stainless steel with optimized machinability. Ideal for series parts with short cycle times.
Benefits of Stainless Steel Turned Parts
Corrosion Resistant
Natural passive layer protects against rust, acids and media. No painting or coating necessary.
Food Safe
V2A and V4A are approved for food contact (EU 1935/2004). Ideal for food and pharmaceutical industries.
Temperature Resistant
Service temperatures up to 550°C (austenitic grades). For high-temperature applications in energy technology.
Hygienic
Smooth, pore-free surfaces are easy to clean. Perfect for cleanroom applications and medical technology.
Mechanically Strong
Good strength values (500–700 MPa for austenitics, up to 1,300 MPa for 17-4PH). For demanding designs.
Long-lasting
Stainless steel turned parts have extremely long service life. Low life-cycle costs despite higher material price.

Questions about Stainless Steel Parts
Q1What is the difference between V2A and V4A?
V2A (1.4301) contains chromium and nickel. V4A (1.4404) additionally contains molybdenum, which significantly increases resistance to chlorides and acids. V4A is the better choice for chemical, pharmaceutical and marine applications.
Q2Which stainless steel grades do you process?
All common grades: 1.4301 (V2A), 1.4404 (V4A), 1.4571, 1.4305 (free-cutting), 1.4462 (Duplex) and 17-4PH (1.4542). Special grades on request.
Q3Is stainless steel difficult to turn?
Austenitic stainless steels (V2A, V4A) are tougher than structural steel and produce long chips. We master the specifics: adapted cutting data, high-pressure coolant, wear-resistant inserts. The result: identical quality as with free-cutting steel.
Q4Can you provide mill certificates per EN 10204 (3.1)?
Yes — we order stainless steel as standard with inspection certificate 3.1. The heat number is documented and assigned to the order. Further documentation (PPAP, measurement reports) on request.
Q5What surface treatments do you offer for stainless steel?
Electropolishing, glass bead blasting, passivation (per ASTM A967), vibratory finishing and brushing. For decorative surfaces also grinding and polishing to mirror finish.
Q6What is the minimum order quantity for stainless steel turned parts?
From 1 piece. Prototypes, small series (10–500 pcs) and large series (1,000+). Series parts from 1.4305 are particularly cost-effective.
Q7What does a stainless steel turned part cost?
Stainless steel is approx. 3–5× more expensive than structural steel and requires adapted tooling. Simple V2A series parts from approx. €5–10/piece, complex one-offs from €60–150. We calculate on a project-by-project basis.
Q8Can you turn Duplex stainless steel?
Yes — Duplex 1.4462 is significantly harder to machine than V2A/V4A, but we have experience with this material. Adapted cutting data and special tools ensure quality.
