The Journey of a CNC Component: From Idea to Finished Part

What actually happens between your order and the finished component in your hands? The manufacturing process of a CNC precision part comprises many steps — each one influences the quality of the final product.

Station 1: Material Selection and Procurement

Everything begins with the right material. Depending on requirements, aluminium, steel, stainless steel, brass or another material is selected. The stock shape (drawn or extruded) also affects quality and costs.

Station 2: Work Preparation

Drawing Analysis

The technical drawing is analysed: What tolerances, surfaces and post-treatments are required? Are there critical dimensions that need special attention?

Production Planning

The optimal process selection is made: turning, milling or a combination? How many setups are needed? Which tools are required?

Station 3: CAM Programming

In the CAM software, the CNC program is created. The programmer defines machining strategies, tool changes, cutting parameters and tool paths. A simulation checks the program for collisions and errors — before the machine starts.

Station 4: Setup and Preparation

The machine is prepared: insert and measure tools, mount clamping devices, clamp the workpiece and set the zero point. This step significantly determines the achievable accuracy.

Station 5: CNC Machining

Roughing

First, the bulk of the material is removed — with high feed rates and large depths of cut. The goal: get as close to the final contour as quickly as possible.

Finishing

Then the final contour is produced with finish passes — reduced feed rates, light depths of cut, optimal cutting speeds for the required surface quality.

Station 6: Quality Inspection

The finished component is measured: dimensions, tolerances, surface and visual quality are checked. For first articles, complete documentation of all dimensions is provided.

Station 7: Post-Treatment

Depending on requirements, post-treatments follow: deburring, anodising, hardening, coating, blasting or polishing. Each post-treatment requires specific process knowledge to preserve the preceding machining quality.

Station 8: Packaging and Shipping

Precision parts require careful packaging. Corrosion protection, shock-resistant packaging and clear labelling ensure that the component arrives in perfect condition.
